Police are searching for a driver believed to be involved in a hit and run accident that killed a motorcyclist in West Los Angeles on Saturday.  Officers responding to a traffic collision call at Jefferson Boulevard and Mesmer Avenue Saturday found a man unresponsive on the ground near a fallen motorcycle according to police reports.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the statement.  his name has not been released by the coroners office.  Investigators believe a driver traveling west on jefferson in a 2007 BMW attempted to turn south onto Mesmer and struck the victim on his 2007 R1 motorcycle,

A small plane crashed Sunday about 2 1/2 miles east of the Barstow Daggett Airport in San Bernardino County.  The plane, believed to be a Cessna 210, was heading from John Wayne Airport in Orange County to Henderson Executive Airport near Las Vegas when it crashed about 12:40pm.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported that the air craft was fully engulfed in flames.  All three people aboard the aircraft were killed.

Due to auto accident injuries, the nation’s largest organization of pediatricians is telling its members and parents that children riding in cars should remain in rear facing child safety seats at least until their second birthday and preferably longer.

This reverses advice many pediatricians gave parents for years that children’s car seats should be turned around shortly after their first birthday.

State regulators are investigating the death of a security guard killed when the driver of a production company van blacked out and his vehicle slammed into a tent on the set of the CBS crime drama NCIS Authorities reprot.

The 52 year old victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital after the 10am accident in the 25200 block of Anza Drive.  CBS suspended production of the show.  krisanne Chasarik a spokeswaman for the California Division of Occupantional Safety and health said the driver backed out with his foot still on the accelerator.

Victims of a 2008 train crash that killed 25 people and injured more than 100 confronted executives from the transportation company that accepted liability for the disaster.  About 60 people attended a meeting Monday at Simi Valley city hall to face for the first time three executives from Veolia Transportation.  Some showed them photos of their loved ones killed when a metro link train collided head on with a freight train and some talked about the injuries that permanently altered their lives.

The executives sat silently a condition they set for attending the closed door meeting according to those in attendance.

The $200 million settlement was the largest of its kind for a passenger train wreck and reflects the maximum amount set by Congress in 1997 to help keep passenger rail systems operating when faced with major lawsuits.

A family wants at least $25,000 after their 9 year old daughter was hit by a car in a crosswalk while riding her bike downtown Huntington Beach. The parent’s from Huntington Beach filed a claim saying the city is responsible for the incident because the design and  maintenance of the intersection made the area unsafe to cross..

Their daughter was hit at the intersectino of Main Street and Palm avenue about 6:30pm. CALIFORNIA VEHICLE CODE 21950 STATES THAT:

(a) The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except as otherwise provided in this chapter.

(b) This section does not relieve a pedestrian from the duty of due care for his or her safety. No pedestrian may suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard. No pedestrian may unnecessarily stop or delay traffic while in a marked or unmarked crosswalk.

(c) The driver of a vehicle approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of the vehicle or take any other action relating to the operation of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian.

(d) Subdivision (b) does not relieve a driver of a vehicle from the duty of exercising due care for the safety of any pedestrian within any unmarked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.

Notice these subdivisions do not necessarily require a motorist to wait for a crossing-walking pedestrian to completely leave the crosswalk and step onto the curb before a driver may lawfully pass. Instead, the statute requires only that a driver yield the right-of-way to pedestrians [subsection (a)], and to exercise “all due care,” [Subsection {c}. Vehicle Code 525 defines right-of-way as “the privilege of the immediate use of the highway.”

In Costa Mesa, two teenagers were struck by a van while crossing 19th street. The 15 year olds were hurriedly walking across the 700 block of  19th streetoutsideof acrosswalkabout 930 pm, when they were struck by a van.  Paramedics took both to Western Medical Center Santa Ana, Where they were treated for concussions,cuts to the headand bruises.  One of the boys suffered bleeding in the brain. Their names and conditions were not released. 

Police questioned the driver, Jeffrey Ford of costa mesa.  He was not impaired, police reportand officers released him without  charges.  The costa mesa police will continue to investigate to determine whether citations should be issued.

A continuing Caltrans project will shut down traffic and bicycle lanes on northbound I-5 in San Clemente and on Pacific Coast highway at Crystal Cove State Park later this month.

In San Clemente, crews started work Saturday to add two sound walls.  Work on the first will close the road from 9pm to 7am on northbound I-5 just north of the Avenida Vaquero undercrossing, closing the No.3 and 4 lanes

Autos tumble off road, injuring bicyclist on path.  In Huntington Beach two cars southbouund on Pacific Coast highway crashed and flipped, hitting a bicyclist, shortly before 8:16am.  Three people were taken to the hospital.  The bicyclist and one driver had serious injuries, while the other driver was treated and released.

The two cars crashed near Pacific Coast Highway and Seapoint Avenue, tumbling down an embankment and onto a service road where the bicyclist was riding.  Both of the vehicles rolled over one coming to rest on its wheels.  Police are investigating the accident.  The bicyclist was in the most serious condition.
